History
Alsbach took over in 1903 the management of music publishing and music store G. Alsbach & Co., founded in Rotterdam in 1866 by his father Carl Georg Alsbach (1830-1906).
In 1909 Johann Alsbach founded the Association of Music Traders and Publishers, of which he has been president for nearly forty years. In this capacity, he was involved in the preparation for the signing by the Netherlands of the Berne Convention for the protection of copyright. He was also involved in the founding of Maneto (Manifestation of Dutch Music Art, 1935) and from Donemus. Until shortly before his death, he served on the Board of Directors of this organization. After the death of Johann Alsbach, the company was taken over by Editions Basart.
Collection
In 1898, G. Alsbach & Co. purchased the fund and the store of the Amsterdam firm Brix von Wahlberg and moved it from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. Through the takeover of Brix von Wahlberg, Alsbach acquired the funds of former Amsterdam music publishers from the years approx. 1830 -1895, previously taken over by Brix von Wahlberg. These contain numerous Dutch compositions.
By adding his own publications, as well as Dutch compositions published by other publishers, Johann Alsbach laid the foundation for what he called a 'Dutch Music Archive'. This should have contained almost all works by Dutch composers, published since the beginning of the 19th century.
In 1939 Alsbach presented his archive to the Stichting Nederlandse Muziekbelangen, located at BUMA. Since then the collection has not been expanded.
In 1982 the collection was transferred by BUMA to BFO Center for Dutch Music (formerly Bumafonds) in Hilversum.
In 1997 the collection was on loan to the music library of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. This library was included in the Dutch Music Institute in 1999.
The Alsbach Collection comprises approximately 14,000 editions and covers the period 1800-1940.
